A breaker interrupts the circuit when current exceeds its rating. That is the design working. Replacing it without finding the overload, the short, or the ground fault behind it just re-arms the same problem — and removes the one thing that was catching it.
Hot, buzzing, or won't reset
A breaker that feels warm to the touch, hums, smells like scorched plastic, or springs back to the tripped position is not a nuisance. It points to a loose connection, a failed internal mechanism, or a damaged bus stab — conditions that get worse under load, not better.
The wrong breaker is in the panel
Breakers have to be listed for the specific panel they sit in. Mismatched brands, oversized replacements, and tandem breakers in slots that were never rated for them are common findings in older homes — and they are exactly what an inspector or an insurance adjuster looks for.

We start at the circuit, not the panel. Which outlets and fixtures are on it, what is plugged in, and what the actual draw looks like under load — because a breaker that trips at nine every evening is telling you something a replacement part will not fix. From there we test the breaker itself: contact temperature, connection torque at the lug, and the condition of the bus stab it clips onto. If the breaker has failed, we replace it with one listed and classified for your panel, which is not always the same brand-name assumption people make. If the circuit is overloaded, the honest answer is usually a dedicated circuit rather than a bigger breaker — putting a 30-amp breaker on 15-amp wire is how conductors overheat inside a wall. A failed GFCI or AFCI breaker must be replaced with the same protection type — swapping one for a standard breaker removes protection the code required on that circuit. Breaker amperage is set by the wire it feeds, not by how often the breaker trips.

Trace the circuit before touching the breaker
We map what is actually on the circuit and measure the load under real conditions. Most repeat trips are an overloaded circuit or a specific failing appliance, and neither one is fixed by a new breaker.

Test the breaker and its connection
We check the breaker under load, inspect the bus stab it clips onto, and verify the lug connection is torqued to the manufacturer's specification. Loose connections generate heat, and heat is what kills breakers and panels.

Replace with a breaker listed for your panel
The replacement has to be listed and classified for that specific panel — not merely the same amperage and shape. We confirm compatibility against the panel's own labelling, install, torque to spec, and test the circuit under load before we close it up.

Questions worth answering.
Almost always one of three things. An overloaded circuit — the total draw of everything running on it exceeds the breaker's rating, which is why trips often happen at the same time of day. A short circuit — a hot conductor contacting a neutral or ground, usually at a damaged cord, a failing appliance, or a compromised connection in a box. Or a ground fault, where current finds a path outside the intended circuit, which is what a GFCI breaker is built to catch. A fourth possibility is that the breaker itself has worn out; breakers are mechanical devices and repeated tripping fatigues them. Which one it is changes the repair completely, so the diagnosis comes first.
The physical swap looks simple, and that is the trap. The bus bars inside a panel stay energised even with the main breaker off, unless the utility has pulled the meter. Beyond the shock risk, the replacement must be listed and classified for that specific panel, torqued to the manufacturer's specification, and sized to the wire it feeds rather than to the load someone wishes it carried. The more common problem is that a swap treats the symptom. If the breaker was tripping because the circuit is overloaded, a new breaker of the same rating trips again, and a larger one lets the wire in your wall run hotter than it was rated for.
No, and this is the most misunderstood part of the job. Breakers are listed and classified for the panels they are tested in. A breaker from another manufacturer may physically clip into the bus and still be an unlisted installation — the interrupting rating, the stab geometry, and the tested fault performance are all specific to that pairing. Unlisted breaker-in-panel combinations are routinely flagged at inspection and are the kind of finding that surfaces during an insurance claim or a home sale. We confirm what your panel is labelled to accept before we install anything, and if the correct breaker is discontinued we tell you what the real options are.
Treat it as urgent. A faint hum at the moment a large motor starts can be normal, but a breaker that is warm to the touch, buzzes continuously, smells hot, or shows any discolouration at the panel face indicates a loose or arcing connection. That condition generates heat, heat loosens the connection further, and the failure accelerates. Stop using the circuit, switch the breaker off if you can do so safely, and call us. Usually not. A single failed breaker in a sound, correctly sized panel is a breaker replacement and nothing more. The panel becomes the real question when the pattern points at it: several breakers failing, corrosion or heat damage on the bus, no spare capacity for how the house is used now, or a panel whose breakers are no longer manufactured. We separate those two conversations deliberately, because a tripping breaker is a common reason people are sold a panel upgrade they did not need.
Both are still in service across LA County and both have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault conditions — the specific failure mode where the protection does not engage when it is needed. For these panels, replacing an individual breaker is often not a repair we can stand behind, because the concern is the panel and bus design rather than the one breaker in front of us.
